Mandolins have a diverse range of tones suited for different applications and musical styles. Our debut mandolin library, Evolution Mandolin, delivers a bright, punchy tone that adds energy to your arrangement and cuts through the mix. With Evolution Mellow Mando, we shift the focus to the warmer, earthier side of the spectrum.

Evolution Mellow Mando’s samples were recorded using an impeccable 1917 A-style mandolin. Its tone is remarkably rich and expressive, just as you would expect from an instrument crafted over a century ago. When sampling the mandolin, we meticulously captured its full dynamic range. When playing softly, you get the feathery sound of the pick brushing across the strings, while playing loudly evokes the instrument’s lush, woody sustain.

Of course, the choice of instrument is only part of the story. The mandolin was brought to life by Ryan Tilby, a talented multi-instrumentalist with decades of experience. Ryan’s artistry was essential during the recording process, and ultimately was a crucial contribution to the authenticity and expressiveness of the resulting virtual instrument.

Known for his broad palette of sounds and styles, Ryan Tilby is an in-demand session musician as well as a Billboard charting artist with five solo albums. In his years as a performing musician signed to Capitol Records, Ryan played at Telluride, Merlefest, FanFest, RockyGrass, and countless other music festivals throughout the United States. He also toured Europe multiple times. Ryan’s music has been featured on Duck Dynasty, the Discovery Channel, and on Outdoor Photo Adventures.

The instrument was sampled at Rosewood Recording Company, one of Utah’s most venerable recording studios. Guy Randle, the owner and recording engineer at Rosewood Recording Company, incorporated analog gear to skillfully sculpt and emphasize the rich tonal qualities of the mandolin. Evolution Mellow Mando includes both the as-recorded signal as well as an enhanced signal that can be blended to your taste.
