Loudness DSP has been stagnant for decades – focusing on minor improvements in some areas that come with their own disadvantages in other areas. Imagine having the highest quality clipper and limiter, with every setting and knob (including their actual routing!) controlled with per-sample accuracy to ensure that each individual sample is treated in the most transparent way possible. You can theoretically get the benefits of both clipping and limiting without the downsides.
