As is well known, while there is an abundance of professional tutorials on Western orchestration and composition, systematic guides for traditional Chinese instrumental writing remain relatively scarce. When composing, many students and musicians lack a genuine understanding of the characteristics and accurate notation of traditional Chinese instruments. Designed specifically to fill this gap, this book focuses on the practical application of Chinese instruments in modern composition and music production.
The book is structured around the following core sections:
● Basic Elements of Chinese Instrumental Melodies: A detailed explanation of traditional elements such as tonality, melodic progression, phrasing, embellishments (Jiahua), and timbral nuances (Runqiang).
● In-depth Analysis of Five Major Chinese Instruments: Focusing on the Pipa, Guzheng, Guqin, Erhu, and Bamboo Flute (Dizi), this section covers playing techniques, composition examples, and insights from professional performers.
● A Tailored Classification System for Composers: Breaking away from the conventional approach of traditional instrumental textbooks, this book reclassifies playing techniques from the perspective of compositional arrangement. Techniques are categorized into single notes, harmonic intervals/chords, ornaments, and overtones, perfectly aligning with the reference habits of modern composers and MIDI producers.
● Comparative Arrangements of the Same Theme: The book features custom-written examples designed specifically to demonstrate various techniques. By applying one or two fixed themes to each instrument, readers can intuitively observe how the exact same melody—when executed with different playing techniques—yields distinctly different acoustic effects and emotional expressions.
